SECOND UNIT AMNESTY

The City of Burlingame has passed an ordinance, effective June 30, 2001, to institute a special permit process to legalize existing second units on properties with single family homes on them.  The program applies only to existing second units that meet the established requirements.

Do you qualify? The Planning Department will review second unit amnesty applications for the following requirements: 

-    Property with the second unit is in an R-1 zone 

-    Second unit was built before 1954 

-    Required parking is provided for the primary dwelling, plus on additional uncovered  space for the second unit 

-    Second unit does not exceed 640 SF of floor area 

-    No more than 2 persons will occupy the second unit 

-    An owner of the subject property must reside in at least one of the dwelling units at all times
