Conservation Tips

Indoor Water Conservation Tips:

  1. Install a WaterSense labeled showerhead. Check the EPA's website for a list of certified products.
  2. Take shorter showers.
  3. Use a bucket to capture the initial cold water from your shower and reuse it for toilet flushing or watering plants.
  4. Install water-efficient aerators in your bathroom and kitchen faucets. The Burlingame Public Library has a Home Energy & Water Saving Toolkit available to rent.
  5. Only run full loads of laundry and dishes.
  6. Turn off the tap  when not in use. Don't let the water run while you're brushing your teeth, flossing, or shaving.
  7. Use dye tablets (or several drops of food coloring) to find toilet leaks.  Leaks are usually caused by a worn out flapper valve (which costs about $5) and can easily be replaced.
  8. If your faucet is dripping or leaking, replace the worn out washer in the faucet.
  9. Install a high-efficiency clothes washer that is Energy Star certified

Outdoor Water Conservation Tips:

  1. Get a smart irrigation controller to automatically adjust your watering schedule baesd on the weather. Turn off irrigation in the winter or wet season (from October to April). During the growing season, water your garden early or late in the day (before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.). Apply using the middle six digits of your water account number (ex: XX-123456-XXXXXXX).
  2. Replace your turf grass lawn with a California native garden and receive up to $800 on your landscaping project. Rebates are available on a first come, first served basis.
  3. Water your plants 2 times per week is enough for most gardens.
  4. Select drought-tolerant or low-water use plants that are adapted to California's climate. Find inspiration here.
  5. Install a shut-off nozzle to your hose.
  6. Take your car to a commercial car wash facility that recycles their wash water. If you decide to wash your car at home, park your car over landscape or the driveway to avoid runoff from flowing into a storm drain and use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose.
  7. If you have a pool, make sure to cover it to reduce evaporation.
  8. Apply mulch to your plants. Three inches of mulch maintains soil moisture and reduces evaporation.
  9. Examine your sprinklers for leaks and adjust them so they water your plants, not the sidewalk.
  10. Check your outdoor garden hose for leaks. Make sure the hose spigot is closed all the way when not in use.
  11. Install a drip irrigation system for trees, shrubs, and flowers to get water to the plant's roots more efficiently.
  12. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks.
  13. Install a rain barrel to collect rainwater which you can use at a later time. Save up to $200 off a qualifying barrel (limit 2 per single-family account or 4 per multifamily/commercial account).
