Toilets Are Not Trashcans

toiletsarenottrashcansPlumbing and sewage problems are preventable if you commit yourself to the phrase “toilets are not trashcans!” By commitment, we mean only flushing the 3 Ps: Pee, Poop, and (toilet) Paper. Below is a list of items that go in the trashcan, not toilet.

Unacceptable items to flush:

  • Feminine hygiene products (i.e., tampons and pads)
  • “Flushable” or disposable wipes and paper towels
  • Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) including pills, cosmetics, fragrances, lotions, etc. Learn how to properly dispose medicine drugs.
  • Floss, Q-tips, and cotton balls
  • Condoms
  • Cigarette buds
  • Diapers

When you flush the items above, they can get stuck either in your pipes or City's sewage lines, which causes clogs. These clogs may result in overflows and pose significant risk in damage to private property and the City's wastewater treatment facility. Clogs, replacements, and overflows are very costly for residents and the City to fix.
