Water Use Restrictions

California is experiencing dry weather conditions and much of the state is in a drought. Fortunately, the City of Burlingame’s drinking water comes from the San Francisco Regional Water System, which includes Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, and is considered to be in good condition at this time. During this first dry year, it is important that we manage our water supplies wisely in case dry conditions turn into a prolonged drought for the Bay Area.

The City of Burlingame is requesting the community to use water wisely during this dry season. Here are some ways you can help conserve water:

  1. Watering your plants 2 times per week is enough for most gardens.
  2. Convert all (or part) of your lawn to drought-tolerant plants, such as California natives or pollinator-friendly plants.
  3. Spread a layer of organic mulch on your plants to retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation.
  4. Examine your sprinkler system for leaks.
  5. Check your toilets for leaks by performing a dye test.
  6. Install a WaterSense certified showerhead.
  7. Read more conservation tips here.

At this time, Public Works Department staff will continue flushing our water distribution system to ensure high quality drinking water is delivered to our community. Flushing is a standard industry maintenance practice used to clean and scour the interior of water pipes. It ensures adequate water flow and improves water quality by flushing out sediments such as iron and other mineral deposits from the water mains.
