Carolan Avenue Complete Streets

City Project No. 83680

This project provides benefits to vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians along this busy corridor. Bicyclists were provided with two dedicated bike lanes on either side of the road and a 3' buffer from vehicles. The pedestrian improvements included new bulb outs at the intersection corners and a crosswalk at Morrell Avenue. The new bulb outs and crosswalk improved the crossing to the nearby train tracks. The community will benefit from the reduced speeds on this partial residential street. Rain gardens were also added to reduce and treat stormwater.

Scope
: The City of Burlingame modified Carolan Avenue between Broadway and Oak Grove Avenue from a four-lane roadway (two lanes in each direction) with Class III bicycle routes into a two-lane roadway with a third center turn-lane and new Class II dedicated bicycle lanes. Project work included removal of existing lane striping, full roadway resurfacing, installation of new lane striping, updating existing ADA ramps, installation of new ADA ramps, removal of in-pavement crosswalk lighting and replacement with flashing beacons and new marked crosswalks, construction of bulb-out curbs with associated storm drainage facilities, and landscaping.
